I checked their server version with a manual http request already about in 2010, and I have seen that they are a 100% Microsoft-ish, closed source, Windows server, dotnet company. On this reason, I did not plan to register here et al.
First another, paid Q&A site always appeared in the Google search, it was maybe called experts exchange or so. I disliked them, they had all the negative side of the SE, but they also wanted money for the right of contributing by them. That was hilarious, and how they poisoned the Google algorithm, was yet worse. As far I know, the SE was born partially as their antitheses.
However, I knew that they automatically give moderation privileges, which is very unusual - typically, moderation-related things, i.e. having a word in topicality, having a freedom to fight misuses - is reserved for a close circle, selected on personal sympathy. That is how internet and such virtual power works in the internet communities, leaded mostly by guys carving very hungrily for it.
The normal way to handle them was boycotting them, and did not interact them on any way on which they could profit.
The automatically given powers, based on contribution, was a very attractive feature. It went very strictly against their own usual mentality.
They were also much more open at the time. For example, it looked that anyone can start a community by them, roughly like on the wikipedia. I even had some project (for example, SE sites on my first or second language, neither of them on English) for which I had used them. Then they have shown their real face, all of these were empty promises. Now I am disliking them as I disliked in the early 2010s.
And yes, their dotnet, closedsource, microsoft, windows line is still causing and always caused a cognitive dissonance by me.
I solved it by doing the lesser evil, but you know, doing the lesser evil does not mean that you are doing the right thing. However, you should actually keep in mind: you are finite being, with finite effect in your finite life. You can not be always 100% orthodox, you should goal to create the largest positive impact.
